Predator Free BOP now in Rotorua

December 9, 2024 |

Predator Free Bay of Plenty has now set up in Rotorua and is giving away 1500 rat traps to locals as part of a community-led backyard trapping programme.  “We are on a mission to bring native birds back to our backyards”, according to Predator Free Rotorua Co-ordinator Lucy Crone.

Rotorua Sustainable Charter members are supporting the kaupapa, with Red Stag Timber donating timber for the traps and Te Puia, Agrodome, and River Rats Raft & Kayak at Rotorua Airport, putting their hands up to host trap collection events.

Te Puia hosted a collection event on Sunday December 8th.  Health & Safety and Sustainability Manager Aroha Clements said “Te Puia is very supportive of this kaupapa.  As kaiārahi of our whenua we too are working towards making our site predator-free and sustainable for our future generations.”

Rotorua Sustainable Charter Advisor Desirae Kirby attended the event.  “We are delighted to support Predator Free Rotorua during this establishment phase.  For 26 years the Charter has been promoting sustainable practice in Rotorua.  Many of our members support nature conservation projects, with a number doing extensive trapping on their own sites.”
